N1 is not N2

The structure N1はN2ではありません is the negative polite form of the Japanese copula です.
It is used to say that something is not something else.

• ではありません (dewa arimasen) = polite, formal negative form.

• じゃありません (ja arimasen) = casual version, very common in daily conversation.

👉 Use ではありません in formal situations (school, work, public speech).
👉 Use じゃありません in everyday conversations.

Plain vs Polite form

• Plain form: ではない (dewa nai) / じゃない (ja nai)

• Polite form: ではありません / じゃありません

Example:

• 田中さんは学生ではありません。

• 田中さんは学生じゃありません。
  = "Mr. Tanaka is not a student."
